Spirit of cooperation ushers in ‘a new era’
In March, the Midwest Institute for Nanoelectronics Discovery at the University of Notre Dame will mark its three-year anniversary. And in the relatively short period of time that it has been in existence, MIND has made great strides, not only in terms of research, but also in the impact it has had on the South Bend community.

Barton Bennett is one of the founders of Odyssian Technology LLC, which began in South Bend in 2002. The company’s primary focus is to pursue the development of smart systems having structurally integrated sensors, antennas, electronics and electrical circuitry.

Notre Dame receives grant for next-generation batteries
Faculty from the University of Notre Dame’s Colleges of Engineering and Science have been awarded more than $1.3 million from the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) in collaboration with research being conducted by Mississippi State University on the development of novel materials for improved battery technology. Luecke to give final State of the City
Next month, Mayor Stephen J. Luecke will give his 2011 State of the City address to the South Bend Common Council and the general public.
The speech will begin at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 7, in the auditorium of the Indiana University School of Medicine-South Bend. The public is invited to the presentation, which will include a slideshow and will be Luecke’s final State of the City as mayor.
ND students plan 22nd film festival
The 22nd annual Notre Dame Student Film Festival will take place Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 20-22, at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center on the University of Notre Dame campus.
The festival screens films that were made by students during the past year as class projects for courses taught in the Department of Film, Television, and Theatre. All films are shot on location and feature the acting talents of Notre Dame students and faculty. More info here …
Festival features 3-minute films
“3,” an international juried festival of films three minutes long and under, will take place on Thursday, Feb. 3, and Saturday, Feb. 5, at Perley Primary Fine Arts Academy, 740 N. Eddy St., South Bend.
“Little 3,” films by and for people under age 18, will be shown at 6 p.m. on Feb. 3; admission is $3. “Big 3” films for adults and young adults will be shown at 7 p.m. on Feb. 5; admission is $6.
